Traditionally, the bridegroom or his family was expected to provide the newlyweds with a home that the bride and her family were then expected to furnish. A bride's dowry traditionally was compensation for being taken care of for the rest of her life. People received gifts at their first wedding to help them set up a home for their new life together. It is considered that couples going through second marriages already have all the trappings of modern life and do not require the gifts usually received at a first wedding though often this is not the case as many people come out of marriages with nothing.
Traditional items include things like ornate bottle-stoppers, cake servers, and serving spoons. Such items are intended to be a keepsake from the wedding guests rather than something they will actually use in everyday life. |
